Lake Water Levels - update

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friend

The Waterways lake is part of a wetland system which cleans the water and absorbs excess rain by rise and fall and after what appears to be the highest rainfall ever recorded in the area the lake level was quite high, and fell slowly. To determine whether the wetland and flood control operated properly or whether the extreme rain event highlighted areas which could be improved the OC Committee has consulted with representatives of Melbourne Water. Melbourne Water has released some facts about the February 2011 event including:

  • Melbourne Water Braeside Park rain gauge measured 171 mm of rain between 9AM Friday and 9 AM Sunday. This makes it an event with greater than 100 year recurrence interval.
  • The peak water level was 2.92 AHD. Melbourne Water marked various points and carried out surveys.

If we compare this with the site design basis of the minimum level of any lot being 3.2 AHD,  then it would seem that things worked as expected to protect against this type of 100 year event.  The minimum floor level allowed is 3.45. The will Committee continue to liaise with Melbourne Water.
